I am wondering if this case about a Harry Potter encyclopedia could have ramifications for other works of literary scholarship, particularly "companions" to other books/authors.

This seems different than many "Companion" books such as the Cambridge series precisely because it seems not to provide commentary so much as to act as a concordance.
I wasn't thinking of those so much as, for instance, a guide to Ulysses, or other single-text resources.
