Why being an SEC coach is sometimes better than being DGS
I suppose showing up at MLA with tailored black suits for our job candidates wouldn't quite have the same effect.
But helmets might help.

For me, this really drives home the strength-in-intimidatingly-dressed-numbers point. If we could show up to our MLA interviews flanked by a entourage (professors and other grad students, perhaps admins also) in matching tailored black suits, well, that's a slam dunk.
Or what we need to do is manage to do something that is completely unexpected but is still within the bounds of good taste and the profession.
I'm not sure what that is, unfortunately.
I would like to point out that South Carolina deployed the surprise black jerseys back when I was a student there. We lost that night to Florida. They came back this past Saturday when we again lost horribly to Florida. This just goes to show you that 1) S. Carolina often is ahead of GA but gets no credit 2) losing to Florida often happens and 3) it's what in those stupid jerseys (or black suits) that really makes the difference.
